CS Rebecca Miano Hails Historic Global Win for Maasai Mara

Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano has led Kenyans in celebrating a major triumph in the sector where Maasai Mara National Reserve was included in the World Book of Records.

 The reserve has been recognized as the site of the “World’s Greatest Annual Terrestrial Wildlife Migration,” a global accolade that cements the Mara’s status as one of the world’s most iconic natural wonders.

In a statement Miano hailed the recognition as a “historic milestone” for Kenya and a proud moment for the nation. “This is not just a breathtaking spectacle—it is a profound symbol of ecological balance, resilience, and the interconnectedness of nature,” she said.

Each year, the Maasai Mara plays host to over 1.5 million wildebeests, zebras, and antelopes as they journey across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in search of fresh grazing grounds. Known as the Great Migration, the event draws thousands of tourists from across the globe and stands as a cornerstone of Kenya’s tourism appeal.

Miano expressed deep gratitude to President William Ruto for his leadership and commitment to tourism, as well as to the Narok County Government and local communities for their steadfast stewardship of the reserve.

“This recognition reaffirms what we have always known: the Maasai Mara is a living marvel,” she said. “The dedication of our local communities has been instrumental in preserving this globally treasured landscape.”

Tourists and wildlife enthusiasts were also acknowledged for their unwavering support. “Your love for this iconic reserve continues to inspire us to protect and promote its unparalleled beauty,” Miano added.

With this global endorsement, Kenya is set to further solidify its reputation as a leading sustainable tourism destination. The Ministry pledged to continue partnering with stakeholders to protect and invest in Kenya’s rich natural heritage.
