Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Crime Scene Investigation Course Concludes at NCIA

A specialized interagency training on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) Crime Scene Investigation officially concluded today at the National Criminal Investigations Academy (NCIA) in Nairobi, marking a significant step toward strengthening Kenya’s response to rising SGBV cases.

The week-long course brought together 25 participants drawn from three key government institutions — the National Police Service (NPS), the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP), and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA). The training focused on enhancing the technical capacity of these agencies to professionally and sensitively handle SGBV crime scenes, ensuring stronger cases and better support for survivors.

Sponsored by the German Federal Foreign Office through GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit), the initiative underscores Germany’s continued commitment to supporting Kenya in addressing complex criminal justice issues, particularly those affecting vulnerable populations.

In a speech delivered on his behalf by NCIA Commandant Mr. Sospeter Munyi, the Director of Criminal Investigations, Mr. Mohamed Amin, expressed deep appreciation to the German Government and the Federal Foreign Office for their generous funding and partnership.

"The German Government’s support is not only timely but crucial in our fight against SGBV," the Director said. "It empowers our officers to ensure justice is served while protecting the dignity and rights of survivors."

Commending the participants for their dedication, Director Amin highlighted their active engagement throughout the course as a reflection of their commitment to justice and professionalism. The training covered forensic handling of evidence, trauma-sensitive approaches to investigation, and interagency collaboration in building watertight cases.

Commandant Munyi emphasized the critical role of teamwork and information sharing across agencies in ensuring the smooth prosecution of SGBV cases. He also reiterated NCIA’s position as a regional hub for law enforcement training and pledged to scale up future courses to meet the growing demand for specialized skills in the criminal justice sector.

Notable attendees at the closing ceremony included Instructor Tom Nyabuti, GIZ Kenya Representative Mr. Ulrich Janen, and Course Facilitator Mr. John Ayres, along with senior officials from the participating agencies.

The successful completion of the training sets a new benchmark for SGBV investigations in Kenya and is expected to significantly boost interagency cooperation and the overall effectiveness of the country’s justice system in dealing with sexual and gender-based crimes.
