Kenya Women Senators Association (KEWOSA) Chairperson and Senate Energy Committee member, Senator Veronica Maina, is spearheading a critical inquiry into the mounting debts and ongoing disputes between Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) and various county governments.
During a Senate session, Senator Maina called for transparency and accountability, questioning KPLC officials over long-standing arrears and the nature of the disagreements that have strained relations between the power utility firm and devolved units. She emphasized the need to resolve these disputes promptly, citing the direct impact on essential services and county operations.
“The people of Kenya deserve efficient service delivery. These unresolved financial issues between KPLC and counties are stalling development projects and crippling basic services,” said Senator Maina.
The Energy Committee is expected to table a comprehensive report with recommendations aimed at resolving the impasse and ensuring sustainable collaboration between KPLC and county governments.
This investigation comes at a time when multiple counties have raised concerns over inflated electricity bills, frequent disconnections, and a lack of clear communication from the national utility provider.
