Parliament was plunged into mourning on Wednesday evening following the sudden death of Kasipul MP Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were, just hours after he was seen in high spirits with colleagues at Parliament Buildings.
Saboti MP Caleb Amisi, visibly shaken by the tragic news, confirmed that he had spent the afternoon with Hon. Ong’ondo Were, describing their final moments together as casual, candid, and deeply human.
“I was with my colleague Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were just this afternoon in Parliament — we chatted, we laughed,” Amisi said in an emotional statement shared shortly after news of the MP’s death broke. “He told me, ‘I need a conversation with you, mambo si mazuri.’ Those were his exact words. Five hours later, he is no more. The news is shocking. Rest in peace!”
The sudden passing of the legislator has sent shockwaves across the political landscape, with tributes pouring in from across the political divide. Many leaders described Hon. Ong’ondo Were as approachable, thoughtful, and committed to public service, with a special focus on education and youth empowerment in his Kasipul constituency.
While official details surrounding his death remain unclear as of press time, sources confirm that medical personnel were called shortly after he experienced sudden health complications.
Hon. Amisi called on fellow lawmakers and Kenyans at large to reflect on the fragility of life and the importance of maintaining empathy and unity, even amid political tensions.
“Today, we laughed. Now, we mourn. Life is fleeting,” he wrote. “May his soul find eternal peace and may his family, friends, and the people of Kasipul find strength during this painful time.”
