President Ruto Commissions Historic New Mukuru Housing Estate

In what he described as the most consequential day of his political career, President William Ruto today commissioned Phase 1 of the New Mukuru Housing Estate, handing over keys to 1,080 newly completed social housing units.

The milestone event marks the beginning of the delivery of the largest real estate development in Kenya’s history—an ambitious 13,248-unit estate aimed at transforming urban housing for the country’s low-income citizens.

“These are not just keys to doors or houses; these are keys to homes,” President Ruto said during the handover ceremony. “We are providing better sanitation, security, and livelihoods to thousands of ordinary Kenyans who would never have had such a chance.”

The commissioned Phase 1—Lot 1 of the project—comprises 5,616 bedsitters. Lot 2, which is under construction, will add 3,024 one-bedroom units, while Lot 3 will offer 4,608 two-bedroom units.

The New Mukuru Housing Estate is a flagship initiative under the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which focuses on uplifting communities at the base of the economic pyramid. The estate, located in Nairobi’s Mukuru informal settlement, is set to significantly improve the living standards of thousands who have historically lived without access to decent housing.

President Ruto emphasized that the Mukuru project is just the beginning, noting that over 200 similar projects are underway across the country. These developments are not only improving housing but also creating employment opportunities for more than 200,000 young Kenyans in the construction sector.

“We will continue making bold and difficult decisions that will change Kenya, forever,” he said. “This is Kenya’s Bottom-Up Moment!”

The government’s broader housing agenda is part of its commitment to provide affordable and dignified living conditions for all Kenyans, particularly in urban informal settlements. With the success of the Mukuru Estate, similar initiatives are expected to be rolled out in other parts of the country in the coming months.
