The cold-blooded assassination of Kasipul Member of Parliament, Hon. Charles Were, has left the nation reeling. But even more distressing than the heinous act itself is the eerie silence and numbness that has followed. In a strongly worded statement, Irungu Nyakera has condemned the murder in the harshest terms, calling it a brutal affront to democracy and a wake-up call for Kenya’s leadership.
“This was not just a killing,” Nyakera said. “It was an attack on the very soul of our nation—a grim reminder of the dangerous path we’re treading.”
He mourns not only the loss of a legislator but also the creeping erosion of public trust and engagement. “What is perhaps even more tragic than Hon. Were’s death is the silence, indifference, and apathy of ordinary Kenyans. But this silence is not born of hatred. It is born of fatigue—fatigue with a Parliament that has become a rubber stamp for the Executive; with leaders who vanish when the people cry, only to appear when one of their own is lost.”
Nyakera decried the climate that allows such impunity to thrive. He labeled the killers as cowards and enemies of the nation who must face swift and unrelenting justice. “Those who planned and executed this vile act must be hunted down and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. This cannot become just another headline—it must become a turning point.”
He also called on lawmakers to treat this tragedy not just as a time to mourn, but as a critical moment of reckoning. “Let this be the moment Parliament finally breaks the chains of executive capture. Let it rise and serve the people not with words, but with courage, with integrity, and with action.”
“Rest well, Hon. Were,” Nyakera concluded. “Your death must not be in vain. May it awaken our leaders from their slumber and remind them of their sacred duty to protect and serve.”
As the nation sends heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and constituents of Hon. Charles Were, the call for justice and reform grows louder. Kenya must not allow the blood of its leaders or its people to be shed in vain.
