The government has reaffirmed its commitment to long-term peace and security in Meru County, particularly in the northern sub-counties that have long struggled with insecurity caused by banditry and cattle rustling.
Speaking during a Jukwaa la Usalama town hall meeting held in Meru, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen noted that security operations carried out over the past two years have significantly reduced violent incidents in areas such as Igembe North, Mutuati, Igembe Central, Tigania East, Tigania West, Buuri East, and Buuri West.
“The security situation in northern Meru has improved due to the deployment of additional personnel and equipment,” said CS Murkomen. “But to secure lasting peace, we are taking further steps including strengthening the National Police Reservists (NPRs), constructing security access roads, and engaging local communities to better manage grazing rights and natural resources.”
The Jukwaa la Usalama initiative—now ongoing across all 47 counties—has provided a platform for dialogue between citizens and government, revealing both shared and localized security concerns. The Interior Ministry plans to use insights from these forums to shape future policy and targeted interventions.
Murkomen was joined by Meru Governor Isaac Mutuma, Members of Parliament Mugambi Rindikiri (Buuri), Rahim Dawood (North Imenti), Kirima Nguchine (Central Imenti), Julius Taitumu (Igembe North), Dan Kiili (Igembe Central), John Paul Mwirigi (Igembe South), and nominated MP Dorothy Muthoni. Senior government and security officials, including Deputy Inspector General of APS Gilbert Masengeli and Eastern Regional Commissioner Paul Rotich, were also in attendance.
The CS emphasized that while national efforts are essential, collaboration with local leadership and communities remains key to maintaining security and fostering development.
“Our mission is to ensure that every part of Kenya—no matter how remote—is safe for its residents. Meru is on the path to sustainable peace, and we will walk this journey together,” Murkomen said.
