Four suspects are in police custody following a dramatic crackdown on a fake gold syndicate operating out of the upmarket Runda estate. The operation, led by a joint team of detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Nairobi region and DCI Gigiri, resulted in the recovery of fake gold bars weighing approximately 9.5 kilograms and various tools used in the illicit trade.
The arrest followed a complaint by a foreign national who reported losing USD 200,000 in a fraudulent gold deal orchestrated by the suspects. Acting swiftly on the intelligence, detectives raided a residence located on plot number 685 along Glory Valley Lane.
During the operation, four individuals identified as Felix Odiambo Otieno, Derrick Odhiambo Omore, Mohamed Ibrahim Mohamed, and Moses Odhiambo Auma were apprehended. Several other suspects managed to evade arrest.
A search of the premises led to the discovery of fake gold bars, a weighing scale, an electronic gold tester (tester gun), a plastic briefcase, and a collection of assorted documents believed to have been used to lure unsuspecting victims.
Crime Scene Investigators (CSI) processed the location, secured all exhibits, and ensured that the suspects were placed in custody as investigations continue. They are expected to be arraigned in court upon completion of processing.
Authorities have issued a warning to members of the public and potential investors, especially foreign nationals, to be cautious of elaborate scams involving counterfeit precious metals—a growing concern in the city’s criminal landscape.
