A 25-year-old woman’s international travel plans came to a screeching halt after she was arrested at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) with 1.3 kilograms of cocaine concealed in her luggage.
Caroline Wanjiku Mwangi was apprehended by officers from the Anti-Narcotics Unit just moments before boarding a flight to Goa, India. The arrest followed a routine security check that turned into a full-scale drug bust when officers noticed two suspiciously packed smaller bags inside her suitcase.
Upon inspection, the bags were found to contain a white powdery substance tightly wrapped in yellow cellotape. A preliminary field test confirmed the substance as cocaine, weighing approximately 1.3 kilograms.
Mwangi was immediately taken into custody and is currently being held at the JKIA Police Station. Authorities confirmed she is undergoing processing and is expected to be arraigned in court in the coming days.
"The suspect will face charges related to trafficking in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances,” said a police spokesperson. “Our officers remain vigilant in the fight against drug trafficking through Kenyan airports.”
The seized cocaine has been secured as evidence pending forensic analysis and presentation in court.
Mwangi's case adds to a growing list of individuals attempting to use Kenya as a transit hub for narcotics smuggling. Authorities reiterated their commitment to cracking down on the illicit trade and warned others against attempting similar schemes.
Her journey to Goa may have been cut short, but the legal consequences she now faces could stretch for years.
