DCI Marks 2025 Labour Day by Planting 3,000 Trees in Push for Greener Future

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) commemorated this year’s Labour Day by planting 3,000 tree seedlings at the DCI Headquarters officers’ residential area, underscoring its commitment to environmental conservation in alignment with Kenya’s national target of growing 15 billion trees by 2032.

Speaking on behalf of DCI Director Mr. Mohamed Amin, the Director of Personnel, Mr. Francis Ndiema, led the tree planting initiative, which brought together officers from all directorates in a show of unity and shared purpose. “Climate change poses one of the greatest challenges of our time. As we commemorate Labour Day, let us renew our commitment to preserving our planet,” Mr. Amin stated in his message.

Mr. Amin highlighted the DCI’s ongoing efforts in environmental sustainability, noting that over 19,200 tree seedlings have already been planted across various DCI locations, including the Mazingira Complex, National Criminal Investigations Academy (NCIA), Magadi Training Field, and the Kiambu County Police Headquarters.

The 3,000 trees planted during this Labour Day event were generously donated by Equity Bank, an act that Mr. Amin lauded as a significant contribution toward the country's greening efforts. “This act of kindness not only helps us beautify our surroundings but also contributes to our efforts in creating a greener and more sustainable environment,” he said.

Mr. Ndiema encouraged officers to maintain unity in supporting initiatives that benefit not just the organization but also the wider community. “Environmental conservation is a shared responsibility, and through such efforts, we can mitigate the effects of climate change and combat desertification,” he said.

Dr. Philip Ouma, PhD, Head of Reforms, Research and Innovation Development (RRID), emphasized the importance of sustaining the initiative, thanking officers for their dedication and framing their participation as a step toward a greener future.

Also present were implementing partners from Hearts of Green Organization and the Wangari Maathai Institute under the University of Nairobi. Executive Director Mr. Moses Muya and Prof. Thuita Thenya showcased their Landscape Repair and Transformation Program (LANSRET), with Prof. Thenya echoing Prof. Wangari Maathai’s words, “when we plant trees, we plant seeds of hope,” and urging continued care for the trees to ensure long-term impact.

Several senior DCI officials, including the Administrative Secretary, Directors of Planning, Complaints, Training, Operations, Liaison and Corporate Communication, Legal Affairs, and the Deputy Commandant of NCIA, attended the event and pledged support for future environmental initiatives.

As a token of appreciation, the visiting partners were gifted copies of the tenth edition of the DCI Magazine, the agency’s biannual publication that highlights its work and impact.

The DCI's Labour Day celebration not only honored the contributions of its workforce but also reinforced its role as a champion of environmental stewardship.
