Four armed robbery suspects, including three Ugandan nationals and one Kenyan, were arrested on Thursday in a major security operation targeting violent crime syndicates in Nairobi’s Dandora, Saika, Pumwani, and Huruma estates.
The suspects – identified as Sipholi Sam Wafula alias Sande, Ogomba Alex, Mohammed Musa, and Wafula Clinton – were found in possession of three firearms, including an AK-47 assault rifle and two pistols, along with 50 rounds of ammunition.
The operation, spearheaded by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), followed an upsurge in armed robberies in Nairobi and parts of Western Kenya. Detectives from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau had been monitoring the gang’s activities, enabling a targeted and coordinated manhunt.
Sipholi Sam Wafula was the first to be arrested. A search of his rented house in Saika led to the discovery of a Falcon pistol loaded with 11 rounds hidden under a pillow. Subsequent interrogations led detectives to Ogomba Alex’s house in Dandora, where an AK-47 rifle with 30 rounds was found concealed beneath a couch.
The investigation then led officers to Mohammed Musa in Huruma, who is believed to be the actual owner of the AK-47. He had been living with his family, using the domestic setting to mask his criminal activities.
According to preliminary findings, the three Ugandans had re-entered Kenya via the Malaba border on May 21, just days after fleeing the country following a violent robbery in Eastleigh. Their cross-border movements have frustrated investigators in previous cases, but this time, detectives caught up with them.
The alleged ringleader, Wafula Clinton, a Kenyan resident of Githurai 45, was apprehended in Pumwani. Upon his arrest, officers recovered a second pistol – a Palleberum Feg 9mm – loaded with nine rounds, tucked in his waistband.
Police say the arrests disrupted a planned robbery targeting a business premises on Eastleigh’s 12th Street. While other members of the gang managed to escape, authorities have identified them and launched a manhunt.
The suspects are currently in custody at DCI Starehe, where an identification parade is scheduled for today ahead of their arraignment in court.
DCI has lauded the public for their cooperation and vowed to intensify efforts in dismantling armed criminal networks across the country.
