In a significant victory for the ongoing campaign against illegal mining and trading of Kenya’s minerals, the Mining Police Unit, supported by a specialized Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) team, has uncovered a mineral-smuggling ring in a series of coordinated raids.
The operation targeted a residential house in Nairobi as well as warehouses in Athi River and Mlolongo, leading to the arrest of four suspects. Authorities recovered several tons of unprocessed minerals worth millions of shillings. Preliminary inspections of the confiscated materials indicate the presence of strategic minerals among the recovered stock, highlighting the severity of the illegal trade.
The State Department for Mining reiterated its unwavering commitment to combating illicit activities in the sector. In a statement, the department emphasized its determination to dismantle illegal operations, pursue offenders, and confiscate equipment used in unlawful extraction and trading of minerals.
"This is a war we will not relent on. We will deploy all resources at our disposal to ensure the eradication of illegal mining and trading activities," the department stated.
As part of efforts to foster sustainable growth in Kenya’s mining sector, the government continues to urge both local and international investors to comply with the country's Mining Law. Potential stakeholders are encouraged to obtain the necessary licenses and permits for mining, processing, or dealing in minerals.
The recent crackdown underscores the government’s resolve to protect Kenya’s mineral resources and promote responsible investment while curbing illegal activities that undermine the sector’s growth and sustainability.
