Kenya Celebrates Milestone Towards Washington Accord with Engineering Accreditation Dinner

The Engineering Accreditation Committee (EAC-Kenya) recently hosted a celebratory dinner to mark Kenya’s progress toward joining the prestigious Washington Accord, a significant milestone in the country’s engineering education journey. The event, which brought together key stakeholders, reflected on the strides made in advancing Kenya’s engineering standards and the path ahead.

Principal Secretary for Roads, Eng. Joseph Mbugua, who attended the event, emphasized that the journey toward the Washington Accord goes beyond simply meeting academic benchmarks. “It’s about ensuring Kenyan graduates are equipped with problem-solving and critical thinking skills,” Mbugua said. He highlighted the importance of this process in enhancing the global competitiveness of Kenyan engineers, urging all stakeholders to remain dedicated and collaborative in this endeavor.

Eng. Obuodha, Chair of the EAC, expressed the significance of the moment, noting that this journey offers Kenya an opportunity to contribute to global excellence, integrity, and competence in engineering. “This is more than a national achievement; it is an opportunity for Kenya to shine on the global stage,” he said.

In her remarks, Eng. Mwongera, Chair of the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK), stressed the importance of universities aligning their engineering programs with outcome-based education. This, she said, would ensure Kenyan graduates are highly competitive in the global workforce.

Eng. Ogai, the EBK Registrar/CEO, also took the opportunity to express gratitude to the international assessors for their mentorship and support throughout the accreditation process. “Your guidance has been instrumental in helping Kenya move toward global recognition in engineering education and practice,” Ogai said, acknowledging the role of the State Department for Roads in advancing this initiative.

The event underscored Kenya’s growing reputation in the global engineering community. The recognition from the Washington Accord will not only elevate the quality of engineering education in Kenya but also open new avenues for Kenyan engineers to compete globally.

The dinner marked an important chapter in the country’s journey to securing a place among the world’s top engineering institutions, underscoring Kenya’s commitment to excellence in engineering education and practice.
