Willy Kenei Emerges as New Political Force in Uasin Gishu Gubernatorial Race Ahead of 2027 Elections

Business leader's entry into the contest has disrupted the traditional political rivalry between Governor Jonathan Bii and Prof. Julius Bitok as he pushes an agenda centred on industrialisation, investment and job creation.

The 2027 gubernatorial race in Uasin Gishu County is taking a new political dimension following the entry of businessman and Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) Uasin Gishu Chapter Chairman Willy Kenei.

Kenei, who declared his gubernatorial ambitions in August 2026, is increasingly positioning himself as an alternative to the established political camps associated with incumbent Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim and Prof. Julius Bitok, popularly known as Simba ni Moja.

His entry has introduced a new dynamic into a contest that had largely been viewed as a two-horse race, forcing political players and observers to reconsider the emerging political arithmetic ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Unlike politicians whose influence is built primarily around party structures and established political networks, Kenei is seeking to leverage his experience in business leadership, investment promotion, institutional management and grassroots engagements to sell his gubernatorial ambitions.

But who is Willy Kenei, and what makes his political proposition different?

Business Leadership and Economic Transformation

Kenei is a seasoned entrepreneur serving his second term as Chairman of KNCCI Uasin Gishu Chapter, a position that has placed him at the centre of business advocacy, private-sector engagement and enterprise development.

Through his involvement in the business community, he has developed networks with entrepreneurs, government institutions, universities, technical training institutions and development partners.

His political message is largely anchored on economic transformation, with a strong emphasis on moving Uasin Gishu beyond its traditional dependence on agriculture and trade towards manufacturing, industrialisation and investment.

He argues that the county has the potential to become a major industrial and investment destination by exploiting its strategic location, agricultural resources, skilled workforce and expanding infrastructure.

His proposed development approach places job creation, support for small and medium-sized enterprises, value addition and attracting investors at the centre of county development.

EPZA Experience and Industrialisation Agenda

Kenei also serves as a Director at the Export Processing Zones Authority (EPZA), where he chairs the Board's Strategy and Business Development Committee.

His experience at the authority has exposed him to investment promotion, export manufacturing, industrial development and strategies for attracting both local and international investors.

He is seeking to translate this experience into a development agenda that would position Uasin Gishu as a competitive destination for industries and manufacturing enterprises.

His argument is that the county should not only produce agricultural commodities but also invest in industries capable of processing local produce, creating employment and expanding economic opportunities for residents.

The industrialisation agenda is particularly significant in a county where thousands of young people continue to seek employment and opportunities to establish sustainable businesses.

Role in Eldoret's Elevation to City Status

Kenei is also associated with the historic process that saw Eldoret attain city status.

He chaired the Ad Hoc Committee on the conferment of city status to Eldoret Municipality, which undertook assessments and prepared a report that informed the process leading to the elevation of Eldoret to city status.

The experience gave him exposure to the institutional, infrastructural, economic and administrative considerations involved in managing a growing urban centre.

As Eldoret continues to expand following its elevation to city status, Kenei is presenting his involvement in the process as part of his experience in shaping the county's development agenda.

His supporters argue that the next phase of Eldoret's growth will require strategic urban planning, improved infrastructure, effective service delivery and deliberate efforts to attract investment.

Education and Youth Empowerment

Beyond business and investment, Kenei serves as Chairman of the Board of Ziwa Technical Training Institute, an engagement that has strengthened his association with technical and vocational education.

His development philosophy places emphasis on connecting education with employment opportunities by strengthening collaboration between training institutions and industries.

He believes that technical skills should translate into meaningful economic opportunities for young people, particularly through practical training, entrepreneurship and partnerships with the private sector.

With youth unemployment remaining a major concern, his proposed approach seeks to make vocational training an important pillar of economic empowerment.

A Different Political Approach

One of the defining features of Kenei's emerging political campaign is his emphasis on issue-based politics.

Rather than concentrating on political confrontations and personal attacks against his competitors, he has largely focused his engagements on listening to residents and discussing development priorities.

His message revolves around employment creation, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, business growth, youth empowerment and accountability in county administration.

He is presenting himself as a candidate whose professional and institutional experience can help strengthen county management and ensure public resources deliver measurable results.

The approach could appeal to voters looking for alternatives to traditional political rivalries, although his ability to translate that appeal into a strong grassroots political movement remains a key test.

The Nandi Connection in Uasin Gishu Politics

Another dimension that could shape Kenei's political fortunes is his Nandi sub-tribe background.

Uasin Gishu is a politically diverse county with communities whose voting patterns, alliances and relationships often influence electoral outcomes.

His Nandi identity could provide an additional political connection within the county's wider Kalenjin political landscape, potentially opening doors to networks and voters beyond his established business constituency.

However, ethnicity alone does not guarantee electoral support, and his ultimate success will depend on his ability to build a countywide coalition that appeals to voters across communities.

A New Challenge to Established Political Camps

Kenei's entry has challenged the perception that the 2027 gubernatorial contest would be determined exclusively by the political establishments associated with Governor Jonathan Bii and Prof. Julius Bitok.

His networks in the business sector, institutional experience and development-oriented messaging offer a different political proposition.

He is seeking to attract voters who may not necessarily identify with either of the established camps but are interested in leadership anchored on economic growth, accountability and improved service delivery.

The big question, however, is whether his professional networks and growing political visibility can be converted into the grassroots mobilisation, party support and electoral numbers required to win a countywide contest.

Can the Disruptor Become the Next Governor?

As the 2027 General Election approaches, Uasin Gishu voters are likely to scrutinise the leadership records, development proposals and political preparedness of all gubernatorial contenders.

For Kenei, the challenge will be demonstrating that his experience in business leadership and national institutions can translate into effective county governance.

He will also need to establish a formidable political network, articulate a comprehensive development blueprint and convince residents that he has the capacity to manage the county's resources and deliver on his promises.

His entry has nevertheless broadened the political conversation, bringing industrialisation, investment promotion, employment creation and professional management into sharper focus.

Whether he can overcome the established political machinery and emerge as the county's next governor remains to be seen.

But one thing is becoming increasingly clear: Willy Kenei's entry has added a new dimension to the Uasin Gishu gubernatorial contest.
