Natembeya Announces Major Medical Breakthrough as Wamalwa Kijana Hospital Performs Complex Spinal Surgeries and Knee Replacement

Trans-Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has announced a major milestone in specialised healthcare delivery following the successful performance of three specialised orthopaedic and spinal procedures at Wamalwa Kijana Teaching and Referral Hospital.

The procedures, conducted by a team of qualified surgeons at the county referral facility, involved two patients who sustained serious spinal injuries following road traffic accidents and an elderly woman who had been living with severe knee complications caused by osteoarthritis.

In a statement, Governor Natembeya said the latest medical achievement demonstrates the hospital's growing capacity to handle complex surgical procedures that would traditionally require patients to seek specialised treatment in major referral hospitals outside the county.

Among the procedures performed was a Posterior Instrumented Fusion on a 21-year-old male patient who sustained a traumatic spinal injury following a road traffic accident.

The complex surgical procedure is used in managing certain spinal injuries and conditions by stabilising affected sections of the spine through specialised implants.

The medical team also successfully performed Cervical Lateral Mass Screw Fixation on an 18-year-old female patient who suffered a cervical spine injury following a similar road traffic accident.

The procedure involves stabilising the cervical spine, which supports the head and protects the spinal cord, and is particularly important in managing selected serious neck injuries.

In another successful operation conducted on Wednesday, the surgeons performed a Cemented Total Knee Arthroplasty on a 71-year-old woman who had endured osteoarthritis for approximately three years.

The procedure, commonly known as total knee replacement, involves replacing damaged surfaces of the knee joint with artificial components to help relieve pain and improve mobility.

The three procedures highlight the range of specialised orthopaedic services now being undertaken at Wamalwa Kijana Teaching and Referral Hospital, offering renewed hope to patients requiring advanced surgical interventions.

Governor Natembeya expressed satisfaction with the performance of the medical team, describing the successful operations as a reaffirmation of his administration's commitment to strengthening healthcare services and bringing specialised treatment closer to the people.

He said the county government remains determined to work with qualified doctors, surgeons and other healthcare professionals to create a medical environment where patients can access quality treatment without necessarily travelling to Nairobi or other major cities.

The governor also took issue with critics who have allegedly continued referring to the hospital as "Shakahola", accusing them of having sinister intentions against the facility.

"While some people with sinister intentions continue to refer to this facility as 'Shakahola', we remain firmly committed, together with our qualified doctors and medical teams, to providing quality treatment and creating a life-saving environment for our patients," Natembeya stated.

His remarks come amid the ongoing debate surrounding the performance, management and development of the county's healthcare facilities.

Natembeya maintained that his administration would not be distracted by criticism but would instead remain focused on strengthening medical services and ensuring that healthcare institutions deliver meaningful results to residents.

He noted that the successful procedures demonstrate the importance of investing in specialised healthcare capacity, including skilled medical personnel, surgical expertise and the necessary infrastructure to manage complicated medical conditions.

For patients suffering from spinal injuries, particularly those resulting from road accidents, access to specialised surgical interventions can be critical in managing complications and improving their prospects for recovery.

Similarly, elderly patients living with advanced osteoarthritis often experience prolonged pain and reduced mobility, making access to appropriate treatment an important part of restoring their quality of life.

The latest achievement is therefore expected to strengthen confidence in Wamalwa Kijana Teaching and Referral Hospital as Trans-Nzoia County continues efforts to expand access to specialised medical services.

Natembeya said his administration remains committed to ensuring that residents seeking treatment at the facility receive the best possible care.

The governor's announcement also places the spotlight on the growing role of county referral hospitals in decentralising specialised healthcare services and reducing the burden on national referral institutions.

As the county continues to invest in healthcare delivery, the successful completion of the three procedures marks an important step towards making advanced orthopaedic and spinal treatment more accessible to residents of Trans-Nzoia and neighbouring counties.
