The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has demanded an immediate, thorough and transparent investigation into the reported abduction of Standard Group Associate Editor Alex Kiprotich, amid growing concerns over the safety of journalists in the country.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, the Council called on Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, in which Kiprotich was reportedly seized along the Gilgil-Nakuru Road before being abandoned in Machakos.

According to the MCK, video footage from the incident shows armed individuals blocking Kiprotich's vehicle and ordering occupants to lower the windows and get out. The Council said the journalist appeared fearful, intimidated and threatened during the ordeal.

Kiprotich was later found safe near Masinga Dam, hours after he was allegedly abducted. 

The Council expressed concern that the incident was the second time Kiprotich had reportedly been targeted, noting that an earlier attempted abduction in Nakuru had not resulted in arrests.

MCK Chief Executive Officer and Secretary to the Council David Omwoyo, MBS, said the continued targeting of journalists and lack of successful prosecutions risk creating a culture of impunity.

The Council also raised alarm over the recent trolling and profiling of editors from different media houses on social media, saying such actions pose a threat to independent journalism.

“Media Freedom is guaranteed under Article 34 of the Constitution and should be guarded zealously by all,” the Council said.

MCK stressed that the State has a responsibility to ensure journalists are not intimidated or harassed while carrying out their professional duties, warning that attacks against the media ultimately threaten democracy.

The Council further said it had previously documented several cases of press freedom violations and presented them to investigative authorities for action, but expressed disappointment over what it termed limited progress in investigations and prosecutions.

The abduction has triggered wider calls for accountability and protection of journalists, with the Standard Group and other stakeholders demanding independent investigations into the incident.

The MCK statement comes as concern grows over the safety of journalists ahead of the 2027 General Election, with media stakeholders warning that intimidation and attacks could undermine press freedom and the public's right to information.
