Kigame Demands Answers Over Alex Kiprotich Abduction, Warns Kenya Is Losing Its Way

Presidential candidate Dr Reuben Kigame has condemned the alleged abduction of Standard Group Associate Editor Alex Kiprotich, saying the incident should provoke outrage among Kenyans and prompt immediate action by security agencies.

Kigame said the events surrounding Kiprotich’s ordeal were deeply troubling and raised serious questions about the protection of journalists and freedom of expression in Kenya.

“If what happened to Alex Kiprotich yesterday does not cause outrage in us, we don’t have a country anymore,” Kigame said.

Kiprotich was reportedly abducted by armed men along the Gilgil–Nakuru Road on Tuesday night, September 1, 2026, before being found safe near Masinga Dam several hours later. The incident has triggered condemnation from media and human rights organisations, with calls for an independent investigation. 

Kigame invoked Articles 33 and 34 of the Constitution, which protect freedom of expression and media freedom, respectively, arguing that journalists must be allowed to perform their duties without intimidation or fear.

He called on the Internal Security Cabinet Secretary, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Inspector General of Police to urgently establish what happened and ensure those responsible are held accountable.

“Internal Security CS, DCI, IG of Police, you have the justice systems of Kenya and the heavenly court waiting to hear from you,” Kigame said.

His remarks come amid growing pressure on security agencies to investigate the incident. The Media Council of Kenya and other rights and media organisations have also demanded a transparent probe into Kiprotich’s reported abduction. 

Kigame's statement adds to mounting concerns over the safety of journalists and the state of media freedom in Kenya, with stakeholders warning that attacks or intimidation targeting journalists threaten the public's right to information.
