DAIRY BOARD CHAIR GENESIO MUGO AND PS JONATHAN MUEKE MOVE TO STABILIZE MILK SUPPLY

Kenya Dairy Board National Chairman *Hon. Genesio Mugo today joined Livestock Principal Secretary Jonathan Mueke in a high-level engagement with the Association of Dairy Processors in Kenya to address the current milk shortage in the country.

In a statement after the meeting, PS Mueke said:

> "Today, we engaged the Association of Dairy Processors in Kenya to find practical solutions to the current reduction in milk supply and ensure milk gets back to the shelves in adequate quantities and at fair prices."

The engagement comes after the country recorded a *3.7% decline in milk production between June and July*, largely driven by the prolonged drought which has put immense pressure on fodder and animal feed availability. The decline is affecting the entire value chain – from farmers to processors and ultimately consumers.

Chairman Genesio Mugo and PS Mueke outlined both immediate and long-term interventions:

*Immediate Measures:*

- Getting more affordable feed to farmers

- Facilitating duty-free importation of yellow maize for animal feed production

- Strengthening milk market monitoring and surveillance

- Ensuring farmers receive a fair and stable price for their milk

*Long-term Solution:*

The government is working on establishing a *milk stabilisation mechanism* that will help manage periods of both surplus and shortage, protect farmers from sharp price fluctuations, and build a more resilient and sustainable dairy sector.

"The government is committed to supporting farmers, stabilising milk supply and protecting consumers," PS Mueke affirmed.

The meeting signals a concerted effort by the Kenya Dairy Board under the leadership of Chairman Genesio Mugo and the State Department for Livestock to cushion farmers from drought effects and ensure Kenyans continue to access milk at fair prices.
