Gachagua Warns Rivals Against Political Violence, Says Goons Cannot Revive Dwindling Support

Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has condemned the use of political violence and hired goons to disrupt peaceful political meetings, warning that such tactics will not restore the declining support of political opponents.

Gachagua said it was shameful for political actors to organise groups of goons to interfere with peaceful gatherings, arguing that Kenyans should be allowed to exercise their democratic rights without intimidation or violence.

“Political violence will not cure the already deteriorating support of our opponents. It is shameful to organise goons to disrupt peaceful meetings,” Gachagua said.

The former Deputy President maintained that political leaders should focus on winning the confidence of voters through ideas, policies and constructive engagement rather than resorting to violence and intimidation.

His remarks come amid heightened political activity across the country, with rival political formations stepping up mobilisation and public engagements ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Gachagua urged political leaders to respect the Constitution and allow citizens to attend political meetings of their choice without fear, saying violence only deepens political divisions and undermines Kenya’s democratic institutions.

He further challenged politicians who enjoy public support to demonstrate it through peaceful mobilisation and engagement with voters instead of allegedly using force to silence their opponents.

The DCP leader has in recent months positioned his party as an alternative political force, with the outfit seeking to expand its influence and attract supporters ahead of the next electoral contest.

Gachagua’s latest remarks are likely to intensify debate over political tolerance, freedom of assembly and the growing competition among political formations as the country heads towards another highly contested election cycle.
