NEMA, KAM Hold Talks on EPR Rollout as Kenya Pushes Circular Economy Agenda

The National Environment Management Authority has held discussions with the Kenya Association of Manufacturers on the implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility regulations, as the country intensifies efforts to improve waste management and promote a circular economy.

The meeting, held at NEMA offices, was led by NEMA Chairman Emilio Mugo, Director General Dr. Mamo B. Mamo and the Board’s Technical Committee Chairman John Kimondiu.

Officials from KAM joined the discussions, which focused on Extended Producer Responsibility, commonly known as EPR, and its role in shifting Kenya from a linear “use and dispose” model to a circular economy.

Under the EPR framework, producers are expected to take responsibility for the entire lifecycle of their products and packaging, including the post-consumer stage when waste is generated.

The regulations are designed to promote waste segregation at source, improve collection and sorting systems, and support recycling, recovery and sustainable disposal of waste materials.

During the meeting, stakeholders discussed concerns surrounding EPR levies, the role of Producer Responsibility Organisations, commonly referred to as PROs, and the need for coordinated implementation of the regulations.

NEMA said effective collaboration between manufacturers, regulators, waste handlers and other stakeholders will be critical in ensuring the framework achieves its intended environmental and economic benefits.

The engagement comes as Kenya seeks to strengthen waste management systems, reduce pollution and create new opportunities in recycling, green manufacturing and sustainable production.
