KCB Boosts Islamic Banking With Shariah-Compliant Solutions for Customers and Businesses
By Emmanuel Kipkoech
KCB Bank has expanded its Islamic banking services with enhanced financial solutions designed to help customers access products that align with their faith, values and business ambitions.
The bank unveiled the enhanced Islamic banking offering in Nairobi on Wednesday, saying the move is part of its wider push to promote financial inclusion, support enterprise growth and provide customers with more flexible banking options.
KCB Group Director for Strategic Innovation, Mark Mwongela, said the bank is shifting beyond conventional banking models by developing products that respond to the diverse needs of its customers.
“If financial services reflect your values, then we are supporting your vision and principles in your day-to-day life,” Mwongela said.
He said customer feedback played a key role in shaping the new Islamic banking products, with many clients expressing the need for banking spaces where they feel respected, understood and valued from the moment they walk into a branch.
“Every time customers interact with KCB, they should feel seen, heard, appreciated and valued,” he added.
According to research by the World Bank, more than 1.7 billion adults globally remain outside the formal financial system. Islamic finance is increasingly viewed as an important tool for expanding financial inclusion by offering alternatives based on risk-sharing, ethical investment and Shariah-compliant principles.
Mwongela said KCB’s Islamic finance expansion forms part of a broader strategy aimed at supporting micro, small and medium enterprises, women-led businesses, digital payments and regional trade.
He noted that financial inclusion should go beyond opening bank accounts and instead focus on enabling people to grow businesses, access opportunities and build long-term wealth.
“When people are empowered to bank according to their values, they participate more confidently and inclusively in the economy,” Mwongela said.
KCB, which has operated in East Africa for more than 130 years, said it will continue working with partners and its Shariah Advisory Council to ensure its Islamic banking products remain compliant with Islamic principles while meeting the evolving needs of customers.
