Governor Bii Under Fire as Senator Cherargei Claims He Wrote 102 Letters Seeking Senate Summons Delay

Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim has come under renewed scrutiny after Nandi Senator Samson Kiprotich Cherargei alleged that the county chief has repeatedly sought to postpone appearances before the Senate over accountability concerns.

Speaking during a Senate session, Senator Cherargei claimed Governor Bii had written more than 102 letters requesting the rescheduling of summons issued by the Senate, describing the repeated postponements as an attempt to evade accountability.

The outspoken senator insisted that county governors must respect oversight institutions and appear before the Senate whenever called upon to explain the management of public resources.

Cherargei questioned several decisions made by the Uasin Gishu County Government, including the allocation of Sh5 million for the construction of a snake park, arguing that such spending raises serious questions at a time when residents continue to demand improved essential services.

He also alleged that the county had employed ghost workers, claiming some of them were being used as political goons instead of serving residents in legitimate public roles.

"The governor must be held accountable. Public funds belong to wananchi, and county leaders cannot continue avoiding Senate summons while serious questions remain unanswered," Cherargei said.

The senator maintained that the Senate's constitutional oversight role should not be undermined through repeated requests for adjournments, adding that accountability is essential for strengthening devolution and restoring public confidence in county governments.

The remarks are expected to intensify political pressure on Governor Bii's administration, which has in recent months faced criticism from sections of leaders over governance, expenditure, and public service delivery.

The allegations regarding the Sh5 million snake park project and the purported employment of ghost workers are likely to fuel fresh debate over the county's spending priorities and human resource management.

As of the time of publication, Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim and the Uasin Gishu County Government had not publicly responded to Senator Cherargei's latest claims.
