FIFA Launches Investigation Into Argentina After World Cup Final Clashes

FIFA has confirmed it has opened an investigation into the chaotic scenes that unfolded at the end of the FIFA World Cup final involving Argentina.

The world football governing body's disciplinary committee has appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to review the incidents that occurred after the final whistle at MetLife Stadium.

Players, coaches, or officials found guilty of misconduct could face suspensions, while the Argentine Football Association (AFA) also risks financial penalties.

The disorder erupted moments after Argentina's 1-0 defeat to Spain on Sunday, as several Argentina players and members of the coaching staff became involved in confrontations with Spanish players celebrating their World Cup triumph.

Among those who appeared to be involved were Nahuel Molina, Leandro Paredes, Thiago Almada, and assistant coach Roberto Ayala.

Initial reports from FIFA indicated that Leandro Paredes had been shown a red card by referee Slavko Vinčić after allegedly pushing Spain defender Eric García by the throat. However, the red card was later removed from the official match record.

FIFA has since confirmed that no disciplinary action was taken against Paredes during the match, although his conduct will now form part of the wider investigation.

Argentina had already finished the match with 10 men after Enzo Fernández was sent off for receiving a second yellow card during second-half stoppage time.

The investigation comes after FIFA had already begun considering disciplinary measures against Argentina over a separate incident in which players displayed a banner supporting the country's claim to the Falkland Islands following their 2-1 semi-final victory over England.

FIFA is expected to announce the outcome of its investigation after reviewing all available evidence.
