Dr. Esther Muchemi Champions Budgeting as the Foundation of Sustainable Business Growth

Samchi Group Chief Executive Officer Dr. Esther Muchemi has challenged entrepreneurs and individuals to embrace budgeting as a critical tool for financial discipline, business sustainability, and long-term wealth creation.

Reflecting on the national conversation surrounding Kenya's budget and the Finance Bill, Dr. Muchemi observed that while public debate often focuses on government spending, many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) overlook the importance of preparing and adhering to their own budgets.

She noted that the National Treasury's annual budget-making process, which begins months before implementation, offers an important lesson for businesses and households on the value of planning ahead rather than reacting to financial challenges as they arise.

According to Dr. Muchemi, many SMEs operate without structured budgets, choosing instead to spend when funds are available and scrambling when resources run low. She argued that this reactive approach exposes businesses to unnecessary financial strain and limits their ability to achieve sustainable growth.

The business leader emphasized that budgeting provides a clear roadmap for monitoring income and expenditure, identifying financial gaps early, controlling costs, and making timely adjustments before small challenges become major setbacks.

Drawing from her own experience during a recent renovation project, Dr. Muchemi explained that although unforeseen circumstances caused the project to exceed its budget, having a financial plan in place enabled her to recognize the variance and make informed decisions. She maintained that even an imperfect budget is far more valuable than having no financial plan at all.
