CS Rebecca Miano Highlights Kenya's Growing Status as Indian Ocean Cruise Tourism Hub

Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary  Rebecca Miano, EGH, has hailed the remarkable growth of Kenya's tourism sector, attributing it to the government's deliberate strategy of diversifying tourism products and accelerating the expansion of the blue economy.

The Cabinet Secretary described the recent arrival of  MS Viking Yi Dun  as a historic milestone for Kenya's cruise tourism industry. The vessel became the first cruise ship to sail directly from Asia to the Port of Mombasa, bringing more than 700 international tourists to the country as the ninth cruise call of the season.

Miano said the landmark voyage reflects Kenya's success in expanding into new international source markets while strengthening its position as a preferred cruise destination in the Indian Ocean.

She credited the achievement to strategic investments in tourism infrastructure, including the construction of the modern cruise terminal at the Port of Mombasa and the introduction of the streamlined Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) system, which has significantly improved visitor convenience and accessibility.

According to the Cabinet Secretary, the continued growth of cruise tourism is creating new economic opportunities for coastal communities by increasing business for tour operators, hotels, restaurants, transport providers, and local artisans.

She reaffirmed the government's commitment to unlocking the full potential of Kenya's coastal tourism circuits, saying the country is firmly positioning itself as the premier cruise and adventure tourism hub in the Indian Ocean.

"Welcome to the  Origin of Wonder ," Miano said, emphasizing Kenya's commitment to delivering authentic, sustainable, and world-class tourism experiences to visitors from across the globe.
