Wetang’ula Rallies Support for Nakhumicha, Backs Ruto’s 2027 Bid at Trans-Nzoia Leaders Conference

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has urged residents of Trans-Nzoia County to rally behind former Health Cabinet Secretary Ambassador Susan Nakhumicha's bid for the gubernatorial seat, saying the county needs fresh leadership to accelerate development and transform its fortunes.

Speaking during the Trans-Nzoia Elders and Opinion Leaders Conference, Wetang’ula emphasized the critical role of community leaders, elders, and opinion shapers in fostering unity, development, and social cohesion across the region.

The forum, attended by more than 2,000 delegates, saw elders formally endorse Nakhumicha as the preferred candidate to contest the Trans-Nzoia governorship on a Ford Kenya ticket in the next General Election.

Addressing the gathering, Wetang’ula called on residents to support Nakhumicha's quest to lead the county, arguing that her leadership would help chart a new development path for Trans-Nzoia.

He cautioned residents against allowing political interests to derail the county's progress, saying development should remain the primary focus of leaders and citizens alike.

The Speaker also used the occasion to champion President William Ruto's second-term bid, highlighting key development projects undertaken by the Kenya Kwanza administration in the region.

According to Wetang’ula, the government has embraced an equitable approach to development, ensuring that resources and projects are distributed fairly across the country regardless of political affiliation.

"Development is no longer based on political leanings. Every region deserves equal opportunities and access to government projects that improve the lives of citizens," he said.

At the same time, Wetang’ula took issue with what he described as persistent personal attacks from a section of political leaders but maintained that he would not engage in retaliatory politics.

He urged leaders to focus on presenting their development agendas to voters rather than engaging in insults and ethnic-based political rhetoric.

"Leadership should be about offering solutions to the people. We must move away from politics of insults and ethnicity and instead focus on issues that improve the lives of wananchi," he said.

The conference brought together elders, community leaders, opinion shapers, stakeholders, and political leaders to discuss the future of Trans-Nzoia County and the region's development priorities ahead of the next electoral cycle.

The endorsement of Nakhumicha is expected to shape the county's political landscape as political parties begin positioning themselves for the 2027 General Election.
