Three Cheat Death as Plane Crash-Lands in Maasai Mara

By Emmanuel Kipkorir

Three people miraculously escaped unhurt after a private aircraft crash-landed at Olkiombo Airstrip inside the Maasai Mara National Reserve on Monday morning following a nose gear malfunction.

The aircraft, registration number 5Y-XCB, was attempting to land at approximately 10:00 a.m. after departing from Nairobi when its nose landing gear reportedly failed to lock down during approach.

According to preliminary reports, the aircraft lost control upon touchdown and veered off to the right side of the runway. The pilot, Captain Mark Ross, acted swiftly by shutting down the engine immediately after landing, bringing the aircraft to a stop about 50 metres from the runway.

The incident occurred near Olkiombo Airstrip, approximately 60 kilometres west of Serengeti Base Camp.

On board were Captain Ross, his wife Margaret Mungai, and Claire Clark, a staff member at Serengeti Camp. All three occupants, who are Kenyan citizens, escaped the crash without sustaining any injuries.

Emergency responders, including officers from the Kenya Police Service, Tourist Police Unit, and National Police Reservists, arrived at the scene shortly after the incident to secure the area and assess the situation.

Authorities have launched investigations to establish the exact cause of the nose gear failure. Aviation experts are expected to examine the aircraft as part of the inquiry.

The incident caused concern among tourists and operators within the world-famous Maasai Mara reserve, although normal activities at the airstrip were expected to resume after safety assessments.

Further updates will be provided as investigations continue.
