A section of the Maasai community in Kajiado County has launched an initiative dubbed "Operation Linda Mali" to help protect businesses and property ahead of the planned nationwide demonstrations on June 25.

The initiative was unveiled in Kitengela by members of the Maa Unity Agenda, who expressed concern over the destruction of property, looting, and violence witnessed during some previous protests. They urged residents, business owners, and investors to remain vigilant while supporting peaceful demonstrations as guaranteed under the Constitution.

Maa Unity Agenda National Chairman Jonathan Ole Pasha said the initiative aims to safeguard lives, businesses, and investments across Kitengela, Ongata Rongai, Ngong, Kiserian, and other parts of Kajiado County.

"We support peaceful demonstrations, but not violence and destruction of businesses in Kitengela and other urban centres in Kajiado," said Pasha.

He further alleged that some individuals involved in previous acts of violence had been brought into towns from outside areas to cause destruction, adding that the government should ensure the security of all residents.

Kaputiei Chapter Chairman Godfrey Ole Ntapayia said business owners had decided to organize themselves after suffering losses during earlier protests.

"We are ready to work with security agencies to maintain peace and protect investments," Ntapayia said.

He also urged young people not to allow themselves to be used by politicians to engage in violence, warning that such actions discourage investment and reduce employment opportunities.

The launch comes ahead of the planned June 25 demonstrations announced by opposition groups. Under Article 37 of Kenya's Constitution, every citizen has the right to assemble, demonstrate, picket, and present petitions peacefully and unarmed. However, the law also provides for the protection of lives and property.

Meanwhile, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen warned that anyone who takes advantage of the demonstrations to engage in looting, violence, or destruction of property will face legal action. He emphasized that while peaceful protests are protected by law, criminal activities will not be tolerated.
