NATEMBEYA PLEDGES RESTORATION OF SUGARCANE ROADS IN TRANS NZOIA
Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has reaffirmed his administration's commitment to improving road infrastructure in sugarcane-growing areas following a consultative meeting with Members of the County Assembly and officials from West Kenya Sugar Company.
The meeting focused on the status of sugarcane access roads and explored measures to restore and rehabilitate roads that have been damaged during the transportation of sugarcane by the company.
Governor Natembeya said the county government is keen on ensuring that farmers have access to reliable road networks to facilitate the movement of cane from farms to factories, thereby reducing transport challenges and post-harvest losses.
He noted that poor road conditions have negatively affected farmers and residents in several sugarcane-growing zones, making it difficult to transport produce and access essential services.
“As a county government, we remain fully committed to improving infrastructure in our sugarcane-growing areas to enhance efficiency, reduce post-harvest losses, and support our farmers,” said Natembeya.
The governor emphasized the importance of collaboration between the county government, the sugar company, and local leaders in finding sustainable solutions to road maintenance and rehabilitation.
He further stated that his administration will continue engaging all relevant stakeholders to ensure that roads affected by sugar transportation are restored and upgraded to high standards for the benefit of residents and the agricultural sector.
Members of the County Assembly who attended the meeting called for speedy implementation of agreed interventions, noting that better roads would improve the livelihoods of farmers and stimulate economic growth in the region.
The rehabilitation of sugarcane roads is expected to enhance connectivity, ease transportation costs, and boost productivity within the county's sugar belt.
Governor Natembeya expressed optimism that the partnership between the county government and West Kenya Sugar Company would yield lasting solutions, adding that improved infrastructure is key to unlocking the full potential of Trans Nzoia's agricultural economy.
“Together, we can build a more prosperous and well-connected Trans Nzoia,” he said.
