Murkomen Rallies Uasin Gishu MCAs in War Against Drugs, Calls for Transformative Leadership
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has challenged Members of the Uasin Gishu County Assembly to take a leading role in combating drug and alcohol abuse while championing development and social transformation in their communities.
Speaking during a consultative meeting with Uasin Gishu MCAs led by County Assembly Speaker Philip Muigei at a Nairobi hotel on Tuesday afternoon, Murkomen emphasized that the role of MCAs extends beyond legislation, oversight, and representation.
The CS noted that ward representatives are uniquely positioned to drive meaningful change because of their close interactions with wananchi, which provide them with firsthand knowledge of grassroots development and service delivery priorities.
“Beyond their constitutional roles of representation, legislation and oversight, Members of County Assemblies are critical agents of development and social change at the community level,” Murkomen said.
He urged the leaders to work closely with national government agencies in addressing the growing challenge of drug and substance abuse, warning that the vice continues to threaten the future of many young people.
Murkomen also called on the MCAs to become ambassadors of peace and social cohesion, stressing the need for leaders to foster unity and stability within their communities.
The Interior CS challenged the county legislators to build lasting legacies through impactful leadership and community-centered development initiatives.
“I urged them to leave a mark in the Assembly and to transform the communities they serve,” he said.
The meeting comes amid increased government efforts to tackle the proliferation of illicit drugs and strengthen community-led initiatives aimed at promoting security, peace, and sustainable development across the country.
