From Coffee Glory to Tea Reforms: Governor Mutai Highlights Kericho's Progress on Madaraka Day

 Kericho County marked Madaraka Day in spectacular fashion on Sunday, with vibrant celebrations at Chelilis Primary School Grounds in Chemosot Ward, Bureti Sub-County, as leaders and residents gathered to commemorate 63 years of Kenya's self-rule.

The colourful event was presided over by Kericho Governor Dr. Erick Mutai and attended by Kericho County Commissioner Ali Omari, national and county government officials, elected leaders, and hundreds of residents from across the county.

Addressing the gathering, Governor Mutai underscored the significance of Madaraka Day as a symbol of Kenya's journey toward self-determination, noting that self-rule has empowered citizens to shape the nation's future through inclusive development and effective governance.

The Governor highlighted the transformative impact of devolution in Kericho County, citing notable achievements in infrastructure development, healthcare services, access to clean water, agricultural productivity, and economic empowerment initiatives that have improved livelihoods across the region.

In a major highlight of his address, Governor Mutai celebrated Kericho's coffee farmers for achieving a historic milestone by emerging as the country's leading producers in both coffee volumes and earnings at the National Coffee Exchange for the first time. He attributed the success to the dedication of farmers and sustained support from the county government aimed at revitalizing the coffee sector.

"This achievement demonstrates what can be accomplished when farmers, government, and stakeholders work together towards a common goal," he said.

The Governor also called on tea farmers to remain patient as the government continues implementing reforms designed to strengthen the tea industry. He pointed to the ongoing construction of the Setet Hydroelectric Power Project as a game-changer that is expected to significantly reduce energy costs for tea factories, lower production expenses, and boost the competitiveness of Kenya's tea in international markets.

Governor Mutai further urged residents to embrace unity, hard work, and patriotism as the nation continues to pursue the ideals of self-governance, economic growth, and sustainable development.

The celebrations were marked by lively cultural performances, entertainment from local artists, and an impressive parade featuring schools, uniformed services, and community groups.
