Kenya is making history by hosting the 11th Our Ocean Conference; the first edition in Africa. The National Assembly Committee on Blue Economy, Water and Irrigation, chaired by Hon. Bowen Kangogo (Marakwet East), has joined global leaders, policymakers and ocean advocates in shaping the future of the world’s oceans.
The conference is designed to focus on sustainable blue economy growth, fisheries, marine protection, climate action, tackling pollution and maritime security.
Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs Cabinet Secretary, Ali Hassan Joho highlighted Kenya’s reforms to improve maritime trade efficiency, strengthen opportunities for fishermen and coastal traders and expand financing mechanisms that support ocean conservation and livelihoods.
In a high-level breakout session on 30×30 targets and High Seas protection, Vice-Chairperson Hon. Marwa Kitayama (Kuria East) shared Kenya’s experience in aligning policy, budgeting and development with ocean protection and social inclusion.
The conference was attended by former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, founder of the Our Ocean Conference, who urged nations to intensify efforts to safeguard the oceans for future generations.
