UN Expansion Strengthens Nairobi’s Position as Global Diplomatic Hub

The United Nations has continued to reinforce Nairobi’s standing as a key global diplomatic hub and the only United Nations headquarters in Africa, further reflecting Kenya’s growing influence in advancing multilateral cooperation and international dialogue.

Speaking during the inauguration of new United Nations offices and the groundbreaking ceremony for a modern conference facility at the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON), Treasury Principal Secretary Dr. Chris Kiptoo said the expansion marks a significant milestone in strengthening the UN’s presence on the African continent.

The event, held on the sidelines of the Africa Forward Summit 2026 in Nairobi, was attended by President William Ruto and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres alongside senior government officials, diplomats and international partners.

Dr. Kiptoo noted that the expansion of the UN campus in Nairobi demonstrates the growing recognition of Kenya as a strategic center for diplomacy, international cooperation and regional engagement.

“The expansion of the UN campus in Nairobi underscores the importance of bringing the United Nations closer to the regions it serves and strengthening support for locally driven solutions across Africa,” said Dr. Kiptoo.

He added that the new facilities will enhance the capacity of the United Nations to host global and regional engagements while supporting efficient coordination of development, environmental and humanitarian programmes across the continent.

The Treasury PS further stated that Kenya remains committed to supporting multilateral institutions and creating an enabling environment for international organizations operating within the country.

The United Nations Office at Nairobi serves as a major center for global diplomacy and hosts key UN agencies including the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat).

The latest expansion is expected to further elevate Nairobi’s profile as an international conference destination and strengthen Africa’s voice in global policy discussions.
