Uasin Gishu Medics Undergo Specialized Sickle Cell Training to Boost Early Diagnosis and Patient Care

Healthcare workers in Uasin Gishu County have undergone specialized training aimed at strengthening the management and early diagnosis of sickle cell disease, in a move expected to improve patient care across health facilities in the county.

The training, supported by the AMPATH Sickle Cell Disease Afya Dhabiti Project, brought together healthcare professionals from various medical institutions to equip them with updated knowledge and practical skills on prevention, treatment, and long-term management of the genetic condition.

Speaking during the opening ceremony, the County Acting Chief Officer for Promotive and Preventive Health, Dr. Billy Lubanga, emphasized the need for continuous capacity building among healthcare workers to effectively tackle non-communicable and genetic diseases such as sickle cell disease.

Dr. Lubanga noted that sickle cell disease continues to pose a significant health burden to many families and communities, underscoring the importance of timely screening, increased public awareness, and proper patient management to improve the quality of life of affected individuals.

He further applauded the partnership between the county government and the Ampath Sickle Cell Disease Afya Dhabiti Project, saying the collaboration is playing a critical role in strengthening healthcare service delivery and supporting specialized medical interventions within the county.

The training sessions were facilitated by Dr. Alice Gichemi, who guided participants through key topics including early diagnosis, patient counseling, management of complications, and best practices in handling sickle cell disease cases.

Healthcare workers who attended the sessions expressed confidence that the knowledge acquired will enhance service delivery and improve patient outcomes in hospitals and health centers across the county.

The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts by the County Government of Uasin Gishu and its partners to strengthen healthcare systems and build the capacity of medical personnel in managing specialized health conditions.
