Kenyan Football Mourns Legendary “90-Minute Man” Allan Thigo

Kenya’s football fraternity is in mourning following the death of former Harambee Stars and Gor Mahia midfield maestro Allan Thigo, who passed away on Saturday evening at his home in Bungoma after a long battle with cancer.

Thigo, fondly remembered by fans as the “90-minute man” for his tireless displays in midfield, died on May 9, 2026, leaving behind a rich football legacy that shaped Kenyan football in the 1970s and 1980s.

Family members confirmed that the former football star had been battling cancer for some time before his death.

In line with his final wishes, the family announced that Thigo will be cremated on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, within 72 hours of his passing. They also appealed for a modest and private send-off free from political activities.

“Allan wanted a simple farewell that respects his dignity and the values he lived by,” a family member said.

Thigo is widely regarded as one of Kenya’s finest midfielders, celebrated for his vision, creativity, and unmatched work ethic on the pitch. During his illustrious career, he became a household name while turning out for Gor Mahia and the national team, Harambee Stars.

His contribution to Gor Mahia remains legendary, having scored an impressive 88 goals for the club despite playing in midfield — a rare feat that cemented his place among the club’s all-time greats.

One of his most memorable achievements came in 1976 when he guided Gor Mahia to their first unbeaten league title while serving as a player-coach, a historic milestone that elevated the club’s dominance in Kenyan football.

Former teammates, football administrators, and fans have continued to pour in tributes, describing Thigo as a disciplined leader whose influence extended beyond the football pitch.

His passing marks the end of an era for Kenyan football, with many remembering him not only for his brilliance in midfield but also for his dedication to mentoring young players and uplifting the sport in the country.
