Kenya and South Africa Set for Major Agricultural Deal as CS Mutahi Kagwe Heads to High-Level Trade Talks
By Lilian Chemutai
Kenya’s Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe is set to travel to South Africa on June 4 for high-level discussions aimed at strengthening agricultural cooperation and addressing ongoing trade barriers affecting the movement of goods between African countries.
The visit forms part of a wider initiative by Kenya and South Africa to deepen bilateral relations and expand economic cooperation, with agriculture expected to take center stage. Key discussions will focus on improving market access for agricultural products and resolving non-tariff barriers that have continued to limit trade opportunities for farmers, exporters, and businesses in both nations.
Officials from both countries are expected to explore practical measures to ease restrictions that affect agricultural imports and exports. The outcome is anticipated to open up new opportunities for producers, agribusiness players, and investors across the region.
A major highlight of the state visit will be the anticipated signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation in agriculture. The agreement is expected to enhance collaboration in agricultural trade, research, technology transfer, value addition, food security, and investment.
The partnership also aligns with broader goals under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which seeks to boost intra-African trade and reduce barriers that slow down the growth of continental markets.
For Kenya, the talks come at a time when the government is prioritizing export growth, increased value addition, and expanded access to regional and international markets for locally produced agricultural goods.
The engagement further reflects Kenya’s broader diplomatic and economic strategy of leveraging international partnerships to expand opportunities for farmers while positioning agriculture as a key driver of economic growth and job creation.
Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe will be among Kenyan officials accompanying President William Ruto on the upcoming state visit to South Africa.
