Government Moves to Strengthen Boda Boda Sector as Busia SACCO Receives Ksh 9 Million Boost
The national government has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming the boda boda sector into a more structured and economically empowered industry as stakeholders continue to recognize its growing contribution to the country’s economy and youth employment.
Speaking during the Busia Boda Boda SACCO empowerment event, Susan Mangeni said the boda boda industry has evolved into a Ksh1 billion-a-day cash economy that supports thousands of livelihoods across the country.
The event saw more than Ksh9 million raised to support the SACCO in establishing a business hub aimed at creating additional income-generating opportunities for its members.
According to PS Mangeni, the boda boda sector has become one of the country’s most critical economic drivers by providing employment to thousands of young people while also offering essential last-mile transport and delivery services that support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), traders, and the wider private sector.
“The boda boda sector is no longer just a transport industry. It is now a major economic pillar that supports businesses, creates employment, and enhances connectivity within our communities,” she said.
Mangeni noted that the government, through the State Department for MSMEs Development, is implementing strategies aimed at formalising the MSME sector and expanding opportunities within the ride-hailing and delivery subsector across counties.
She explained that the government’s plan seeks to create structured fulfilment systems that will allow boda boda operators to access more reliable and organized work opportunities.
The PS said the move will not only increase incomes for riders but also improve efficiency in connecting businesses and customers through modern transport and delivery networks.
“We are working towards creating fulfilment opportunities that will expand the ride-hailing and delivery subsector across counties. This will help riders secure structured work opportunities while strengthening their role in supporting businesses and economic growth,” she added.
The empowerment event attracted several senior government officials and elected leaders from the Western region and beyond, highlighting the growing recognition of the boda boda sector as a key player in Kenya’s economic development.
Among the leaders present were Raymond Omolo, Aaron Cheruiyot, Kenneth Lusaka, Paul Otuoma, Ayub Savula, Raphael Wanjala, Mary Emase, and Geoffrey Mulanya among other leaders.
Leaders who addressed the gathering commended boda boda operators for their contribution to economic growth and called for increased support to enable the sector to operate more professionally and sustainably.
They noted that beyond transport services, boda boda operators have become central players in trade, logistics, and digital commerce, particularly through delivery services that continue to grow across the country.
Governor Lusaka said empowering SACCOs within the sector will help riders access financial support, investment opportunities, and business training necessary for long-term economic stability.
Governor Otuoma on his part emphasized the need for partnerships between national and county governments to support youth-driven enterprises and strengthen grassroots economies.
Senator Cheruiyot lauded the fundraising initiative, saying investments in cooperative societies and organized groups remain critical in improving financial inclusion among young people.
Stakeholders at the event also called for enhanced road safety training, access to affordable financing, and policies that will protect boda boda operators while encouraging professionalism within the sector.
The planned business hub for the Busia Boda Boda SACCO is expected to create additional opportunities for members through business support services, partnerships, and expanded delivery and fulfilment operations.
The initiative forms part of the government’s broader efforts to formalise the informal sector, empower MSMEs, and harness the economic potential of youth-led enterprises across the country.
