AFCON Blow as Kipchoge Keino Stadium Dropped from Kenya’s 2027 Hosting Plans

The iconic Kipchoge Keino Stadium has officially been dropped from Kenya’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after concerns emerged over delays in the completion of the facility.

Speaking on the matter, Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi admitted that the government was no longer optimistic that the stadium would be ready in time for the continental football showpiece.

According to the Ministry of Sports, completing the stadium before the tournament kicks off would require what officials described as an “impossible miracle,” effectively ruling the facility out of Kenya’s AFCON infrastructure plans.

The development comes as a major setback for sports fans and leaders in the North Rift region, particularly in Eldoret, which had hoped to host some of the high-profile matches during the tournament jointly organized by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

Kipchoge Keino Stadium had been earmarked for major renovations and expansion to meet standards set by Confederation of African Football. However, slow progress in construction works and concerns over timelines have now forced the government to reconsider its role in the AFCON hosting blueprint.

The announcement is likely to trigger fresh debate over stalled sports infrastructure projects in the country, with local leaders expected to pile pressure on the government to speed up completion of the stadium despite its exclusion from AFCON plans.

Kenya is racing against time to prepare key facilities ahead of the 2027 tournament, which is expected to attract thousands of football fans from across Africa and beyond.
