Transformer Vandal Arrested After Two-Year Manhunt in Kakamega
Residents of Shianda village in Malava Constituency, Kakamega County can finally breathe a sigh of relief following the arrest of a suspected serial transformer vandal linked to widespread power disruptions in the area.
Alfred Hassan Bushuru, who had allegedly evaded authorities for nearly two years, was apprehended in a coordinated operation by detectives. His arrest marks a significant breakthrough in efforts to curb vandalism targeting electrical infrastructure in western Kenya.
Bushuru first came under investigation on August 2, 2024, when officers attached to the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC), working alongside detectives, raided his residence in Shianda. Although he managed to escape during the initial operation, officers recovered several suspicious items, including a dismantled transformer, copper windings, transformer oil, and assorted electrical equipment.
Following months of investigations and surveillance, authorities finally tracked him down. Upon arrest, Bushuru reportedly led officers back to his homestead, where a second search uncovered additional evidence. Items recovered included KPLC meter cards, multiple SIM cards, a filled electricity application form, and job cards from various institutions—all allegedly linked to the suspect.
Preliminary findings suggest Bushuru may have played a central role in a broader network responsible for transformer vandalism across Malava and surrounding areas. The crimes have left multiple villages without electricity, disrupting businesses, schools, and healthcare services.
Local residents welcomed the arrest, expressing hope that it would bring an end to persistent blackouts that have hampered daily life.
Bushuru is currently being held at Kabras Police Station as detectives finalize investigations and prepare to arraign him in court.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), in collaboration with KPLC, has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding critical infrastructure. Authorities have warned that individuals involved in vandalism will face strict legal consequences, emphasizing that such acts pose a serious threat to the country’s economy and public welfare.
