The New Face of Farming: Young people changing Agriculture

Over the decades, farming in Kenya was regarded as a preserve of an older generation. However, nowadays, that story is evolving, thanks to young innovators who are transforming farming in locations such as Nakuru County.

Brian Mwangi, 28 years old, works on a small, but prosperous farm where the smartphone app, which includes a sensor to measure soil water content and weather conditions, helps the farmer check his crops. He explains that farming is no longer a guesswork. “It’s about data.”

Technology, entrepreneurship and an increased awareness on food security are increasing youth participation in agriculture. The industry is becoming more appealing and lucrative through modern agricultural practices, including greenhouse agriculture, hydroponic agriculture, and precision agriculture.

Brian belongs to a new generation which does not regard agriculture as a last resort, but as a business. Young farmers are establishing networks and exchanging knowledge through social media, training programs and access to information.

However, challenges remain. Availability of land, capital, and markets has remained a constraint to the potential of many aspiring farmers. Another element of uncertainty is climate change that influences the amount of rainfall and crop yields.

Nonetheless, success stories are on the rise. Agribusinesses which are led by the youth are providing local and international markets, employment opportunities and even boosting the economy.

Government programs to assist young farmers are taking root, yet there is more to be done to get policy and practice to meet.

In his farm, Brian checks a row of thriving tomatoes, his face showing pride and determination. It is altering the image of farming, he says. It is not merely survival but innovation and opportunity.

Kenya has a golden opportunity to rely on the energy and innovativeness of the young generation as it determines its future- its agricultural sector may be heavily relying on young people who are not afraid to dig into the ground and redefine what farming is all about.
