Ruto Champions Affordable Housing as Kenya Leads Africa’s Urban Transformation

Kenya has reinforced its standing as a trailblazer in sustainable urban development, with President William Ruto spotlighting the Affordable Housing Programme as a cornerstone of the country’s strategy to reshape its cities.

Addressing delegates at the ongoing Africa Urban Forum 2, President Ruto reaffirmed the government’s commitment to tackling the housing deficit in urban centres while promoting inclusive, well-planned, and livable communities.

He emphasized that the Affordable Housing Programme goes beyond constructing homes, describing it as a transformative initiative designed to integrate housing with essential infrastructure, social services, and economic opportunities.

“The Affordable Housing Programme is not just about shelter—it is about dignity, opportunity, and building communities where Kenyans can thrive,” the President said.

The initiative has become a key driver of economic growth, creating thousands of jobs in construction and related sectors while supporting local industries. It is also accelerating the development of critical infrastructure, including roads, water supply, and electricity, aimed at improving urban connectivity and quality of life.

Experts and stakeholders attending the forum praised Kenya’s model, noting that its integrated approach to housing and urban planning offers valuable lessons for other African nations facing rapid urbanization and rising demand for affordable homes.

With urban populations steadily increasing, the government projects that the Affordable Housing Programme will significantly reduce the national housing deficit while expanding access to homeownership for low- and middle-income earners.

As Kenya continues to invest in sustainable urban solutions, the programme is positioning the country as a leader in redefining how cities across Africa can grow—more inclusively, more sustainably, and with people at the centre of development.
