Parliamentary Committee Praises Progress in Kipchoge Keino Stadium Rehabilitation
The Committee, led by Chairperson Dan Wanyama, conducted an inspection tour of the facility in Uasin Gishu County to assess the progress of the project. The visit comes months after lawmakers raised alarm over the slow pace of construction and the limited presence of contractors on site.
During the latest tour, Committee members observed a significant turnaround, noting that the site was now active, with visible construction works ongoing and improved coordination among stakeholders. Members said the progress reflects the impact of corrective measures implemented after the Committee’s previous visit.
Speaking to journalists, Wanyama recalled that the Committee had issued a firm ultimatum to the relevant Ministry, demanding tangible progress and accountability in the delivery of the project. He noted that the current state of the stadium demonstrates a renewed sense of commitment by all parties involved.
“We have come back today and can confirm that there is reasonable improvement,” said Wanyama. “The work is ongoing and continuous, which is a clear indication that the project is now on the right track.”
The lawmaker emphasized the importance of completing the stadium to modern standards, noting that the facility plays a critical role in nurturing athletic talent in the region, which is globally recognized for producing elite long-distance runners.
Committee members also underscored the need for sustained momentum to ensure the project is completed within the stipulated timelines. They cautioned against any further delays, urging contractors and government agencies to maintain the current pace of work.
Other legislators present echoed Wanyama’s sentiments, stating that the improved progress is encouraging but must be matched with consistency and adherence to quality standards. They stressed that public investment in sports infrastructure must yield value for money and benefit local communities.
The rehabilitation of Kipchoge Keino Stadium is expected to transform the facility into a world-class sports complex capable of hosting both national and international events. Once completed, the stadium will not only boost sports development but also stimulate economic activity in Eldoret and the wider Uasin Gishu County through tourism and related opportunities.
Officials from the implementing agencies assured the Committee that adequate measures have been put in place to avoid previous setbacks, including enhanced supervision, increased workforce on site, and improved supply of construction materials.
