ODM Condemns Attack on Senator Godfrey Osotsi, Calls for Swift Justice
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has strongly condemned an attack on Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi that occurred earlier today in Kisumu, terming it a “cowardly and criminal act” that undermines Kenya’s democratic values.
In a press statement released on Tuesday, ODM Chairperson and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga reaffirmed the party’s commitment to peaceful political engagement and respect for constitutional freedoms. She emphasized that ODM does not condone intimidation, coercion, or political violence in any form.
“Our movement is founded on the principles of social democracy, pluralism, and constitutionalism,” the statement read. “We are committed to protecting human rights and eradicating tribalism, harassment, and oppression, while defending freedom of expression and human dignity for all Kenyans.”
The party noted that such values are central to its identity and history, adding that any attack on a leader based on their political views or affiliations is an attack on Kenya’s democratic space. ODM stressed that violence should never be used as a tool for political contestation.
The statement also extended well wishes to Senator Osotsi, expressing hope for his quick and full recovery. ODM declared solidarity with the senator, his family, and all Kenyans who support peaceful political discourse.
At the same time, the party called on the National Police Service to act swiftly in investigating the incident and bringing those responsible to justice. It warned against normalizing political violence, urging authorities to ensure accountability.
Governor Wanga further cautioned against using the incident to stigmatize residents of Kisumu, noting that criminal acts should be attributed to individuals rather than entire communities.
“Such incidents must not become a pretext for profiling or unfairly labeling a city or its people,” she said.
The attack has raised fresh concerns about political tolerance and security, as leaders across the spectrum continue to call for calm and adherence to democratic principles.
