Mass Teacher Retirements Threaten Leadership Stability in Secondary Schools

By Melwin Kiprop

Secondary schools across Kenya are facing a leadership crisis as hundreds of principals prepare to retire this year. This raises concerns about succession gaps and administrative continuity.

Many schools reportedly lack deputy principals, whether permanent or temporary, which leaves them without immediate successors when principals leave.

The Teachers Service Commission has faced criticism for delays in promotions and for uneven distribution of teachers to deputy principal positions across counties.

These inconsistencies have created situations where some teachers get promoted in certain areas while equally qualified teachers are overlooked in others.

This situation raises concerns about how well the Competency Based Education curriculum will be implemented in senior secondary schools throughout the country.

KUPPET has warned that the lack of succession planning could disrupt school management and impact learning outcomes if not addressed urgently.

In Trans Nzoia County, many principals are set to retire without deputy principals in place, which increases the leadership gap.

Rural and difficult areas are especially affected, while urban schools tend to have better staffing and resources.

Lawmakers have pointed to these staffing imbalances as proof of ongoing inequality in teacher distribution and national education planning.

Teachers are now calling on the TSC to fill leadership vacancies quickly to ensure continuity and maintain education standards.

If action is not taken, they warn, school governance, syllabus delivery, and the smooth implementation of ongoing education reforms may be affected across the country.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has previously noted that staffing shortages in several schools highlight broader systemic challenges in the education sector.
