Lawmakers Raise Alarm Over Rising Insecurity, Demand Urgent Action

The National Assembly of Kenya Liaison Committee has raised serious concerns over increasing cases of insecurity and unrest across the country, warning that the situation could escalate if not addressed promptly.

Speaking during a session held at Parliament Buildings on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, the committee—chaired by Gladys Boss Shollei—said the growing incidents pose a threat to national stability and public safety.

Members of the committee noted that the reported cases are widespread and not isolated, pointing to a troubling pattern of criminal activity in different parts of the country. Among the issues highlighted were the emergence of illegal roadblocks where motorists are forced to pay to pass, attacks at public gatherings, theft, and killings allegedly carried out by individuals claiming political affiliations.

Legislators also expressed concern over the increasing misuse of firearms, warning that the trend could further worsen insecurity if urgent measures are not taken.

“To address these challenges, there must be coordinated and decisive action,” the committee stated, emphasizing the need for a stronger response from security agencies.

In response to the escalating situation, the Liaison Committee announced plans to convene a joint meeting with the Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security, alongside the Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Interior and National Administration. The meeting is expected to focus on identifying and implementing practical strategies to curb insecurity and safeguard citizens.

Lawmakers warned that failure to act swiftly could instill fear among the public and destabilize the country, particularly as Kenya moves closer to the next election period.

Beyond immediate security concerns, the committee also pointed to systemic challenges within the justice system, particularly gaps in forensic capacity that continue to delay investigations and prosecutions.

Members called for increased funding to the National Forensic Laboratories to support expansion and the acquisition of modern equipment. They noted that prolonged delays in DNA and toxicology testing have hindered timely justice for victims and slowed down criminal investigations.

The legislators emphasized that strengthening forensic capabilities would be critical in ensuring accountability and improving the efficiency of the criminal justice system.

The committee’s remarks underscore growing concern among policymakers over the state of national security, with calls intensifying for urgent, coordinated action to restore public confidence and maintain law and order.
