KAG Nyahururu Bishop Simon Kieru Urges Parents to Stay Vigilant as Children Break for April Holidays
As schools across Kenya close for the April holidays, parents and guardians have been urged to remain vigilant and actively engaged in their children’s lives during the extended break. Bishop Simon Kieru of the Kenya Assemblies of God Nyahururu District has called on families to take deliberate steps to safeguard the well-being and moral upbringing of children while they are at home.
Speaking in light of increasing social and behavioral challenges affecting young people, Bishop Kieru emphasized that school holidays, while providing rest and bonding time, can also expose children to risks if left unsupervised. He noted that the absence of structured school routines often creates a gap that can be filled with negative influences, including harmful content, peer pressure, and substance abuse.
“Parents must take an active interest in what their children are consuming, both online and offline,” he said. “This includes monitoring television programs, social media usage, and the kind of company they keep. The home must remain the first line of defense in shaping a child’s values.”
The cleric expressed concern over the growing accessibility of inappropriate digital content, warning that without guidance, children can easily be influenced by material that promotes violence, immorality, or unrealistic lifestyles. He encouraged parents to establish open communication with their children, creating a safe environment where they can discuss what they encounter and seek guidance without fear.
In addition to monitoring content, Bishop Kieru strongly cautioned against the rising threat of drug and substance abuse among young people. He urged parents and guardians to be proactive in educating their children about the dangers of drugs, noting that curiosity and peer influence often play a significant role during school breaks.
“Drugs destroy lives and futures. We must not assume our children are immune,” he said. “Take time to talk to them, understand their struggles, and guide them toward making responsible decisions.”
He further called on communities to work together in protecting children, stressing that parenting should not be viewed as an individual responsibility alone. Neighbors, religious institutions, and local leaders all have a role to play in ensuring that young people are nurtured in safe and supportive environments.
Central to his message was the importance of parents and guardians serving as role models. Bishop Kieru underscored that children learn more from what adults do than what they say. He urged adults to demonstrate discipline, integrity, and responsible behavior in their daily lives.
“You cannot expect a child to follow values that you do not practice,” he stated. “Be the example you want your children to emulate. Show them respect, responsibility, and faith in action.”
The April holidays also present an opportunity for families to strengthen bonds through meaningful activities. Bishop Kieru encouraged parents to engage their children in constructive pursuits such as reading, sports, community service, and spiritual growth. Such activities, he said, not only keep children occupied but also contribute to their holistic development.
He also highlighted the importance of guiding children in setting goals and using their time productively, rather than allowing idleness to take root. “An idle mind is vulnerable. Let us help our children discover their talents and passions during this time,” he added.
As the holiday period continues, Bishop Kieru’s message serves as a timely reminder of the critical role families play in shaping the next generation. His call to action underscores the need for vigilance, intentional parenting, and strong moral leadership within the home.
Ultimately, he stressed that raising responsible and well-rounded children requires consistent effort, especially during periods when they are away from the structured environment of school. By staying present, informed, and engaged, parents and guardians can help ensure that the April holidays become a time of growth, safety, and positive transformation for children across the country.
