Government Rolls Out Topdressing Fertilizer Distribution as Farmers Redeem 2.7 Million Bags

The government has intensified the distribution of subsidized topdressing fertilizer to farmers across the country, with supplies now available at various National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) depots in regions where crop topdressing is currently underway.

According to officials, the ongoing exercise forms part of the 2026 Long Rains Subsidized Fertilizer Programme, which aims to boost food production and support farmers during the critical growing season. A total of one million bags of Calcium Ammonium Nitrate (CAN) fertilizer are currently being distributed, with suppliers working to ensure timely delivery to NCPB depots nationwide.

The Ministry of Agriculture reported that since the start of the programme, farmers have already redeemed approximately 2.7 million bags of topdressing fertilizer, reflecting strong uptake and demand for the subsidized input.

Officials noted that the high demand has placed pressure on supply chains, but assured farmers that additional consignments are being delivered to replenish stocks in various depots.

“The distribution is ongoing, and we are working closely with suppliers to ensure that all registered farmers access the fertilizer they need,” an official said.

The National Cereals and Produce Board has urged farmers to remain patient as the exercise continues, emphasizing that the government is committed to ensuring equitable access to the subsidized fertilizer.

The programme is part of broader efforts by the government to lower production costs, improve crop yields, and enhance national food security. By making fertilizer more affordable, authorities hope to cushion farmers from rising input costs and encourage increased agricultural productivity.

Farmers have welcomed the initiative, noting that access to subsidized fertilizer plays a key role in improving harvests, particularly during the long rains season, which is crucial for staple food production.

As distribution continues across the country, the government has reiterated its commitment to streamlining the process and ensuring that all eligible farmers benefit from the programme in a timely manner.
