Four Arrested in Ukunda Over Murder of British National, String of Violent Robberies

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested four suspects in connection with the murder of a British national and a series of violent robberies targeting foreign nationals along the Coast.

The suspects—Bernard Mbusu, Isaac Kinoti Kobia, Evans Muthengi Mutaki, and Kelvin Mwangi Njoroge—were apprehended during an intelligence-led, multi-agency operation in Ukunda.

According to investigators, the operation brought together officers from the DCI’s Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CR&IB) headquarters, alongside teams from the Sub-County Criminal Investigations Offices in Nyali and Msambweni.

Authorities say the arrests mark a major breakthrough in the investigation into the abduction and murder of British national Campbell Scott Alistair, whose body was discovered in Mukuyuni along the Machakos–Wote road in February 2025.

The suspects are also linked to a robbery with violence incident involving an American national in Nyali, as well as another similar attack reported in Watamu in Malindi Sub-County.

Detectives tracked the suspects to Ideal Apartments in Ukunda, where they were arrested. A subsequent search of the premises led to the recovery of several items believed to have been stolen during the crimes. These included an HP laptop, multiple mobile phones, assorted foreign currencies, credit cards, cheque books from various banks, and electronic payment (PDQ) machines.

Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) personnel processed the scene, collecting forensic evidence expected to strengthen the case against the suspects.

The four are currently being held at Nyali Police Station as investigations continue. Detectives say they are working to establish the full extent of the suspects’ activities, with indications pointing to a wider criminal network targeting both locals and foreign visitors.

The DCI has reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice for victims and enhancing security in the region, particularly in key tourism zones along the Coast.
