Eldoret Summit Calls for Stronger Enforcement of Laws Protecting Women

Participants at a women in business summit in Eldoret have called for stricter enforcement and proper implementation of laws aimed at protecting women from violence and exploitation in society.

The calls come amid growing concern over rising cases of gender-based violence (GBV) and gender-based corruption, following a recent report by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and other agencies.

Speaking during the summit, Jane Kariuki, a psychologist, highlighted the psychological toll of such abuses, noting that many women suffer in silence.

“Gender-based violence leaves deep emotional scars, and many victims fear speaking out due to stigma and lack of support,” she said.

Participants from both government and private sectors pointed out that women often face exploitation when seeking essential services. Ann Mutoto, one of the participants, decried the vice of sextortion.

“It is unfortunate that some women are asked for sexual favours just to access services that are their right,” she said.

Echoing her sentiments, Iddah Otieno, a law student at Moi University, called for accountability and legal awareness.

“We have laws in place, but implementation is weak. Women need to know their rights and institutions must act decisively,” she said.

Uasin Gishu County Chief Officer for Gender and Social Protection, Marion Birgen, emphasized the role of government in protecting women.

“We are working to strengthen systems that ensure offenders are brought to justice and survivors receive the support they need,” she said.

The summit organizer and Executive Director of Life Lifters Kenya, Cynthia Muhonja, said the forum aimed to empower women economically and socially.

“When women are empowered with knowledge and economic opportunities, they are less vulnerable to exploitation,” she said.

The summit, themed “Leading with Purpose: Empowering Women, Enhancing Entrepreneurship and Economic Empowerment,” sought to equip women with knowledge about their rights while exposing them to business opportunities.

Participants urged stakeholders across all sectors to collaborate in addressing gender-based violence and corruption, stressing that effective enforcement of existing laws is key to safeguarding women’s rights and dignity.
