Eldoret Eyes Smart City After China Tour, Says Deputy Governor Kapkea

Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor Evans Kapkea has announced ambitious plans to transform Eldoret into a smart, future-ready city following a high-level benchmarking visit to leading transport and technology firms in China.

Kapkea said the visit exposed county officials to cutting-edge innovations in urban mobility and integrated city management, which he described as critical to addressing the challenges that come with Eldoret’s rapid growth.

“As the City of Champions continues to expand, the need for modern, efficient, and reliable transport systems is no longer optional—it is urgent,” he said.

During the tour, Kapkea noted that the delegation observed advanced train manufacturing processes, intelligent traffic systems, and smart urban solutions designed to streamline movement and improve service delivery.

The county, he revealed, is now actively seeking credible global partners to support the rollout of smart city technologies, with a strong focus on smart parking systems, intelligent traffic control, and digital advertising platforms.

“These solutions will not only ease congestion and enhance mobility but also strengthen our revenue base and create new opportunities for businesses,” Kapkea said.

He emphasized that adopting smart technologies will play a key role in positioning Eldoret as a competitive regional hub for trade, investment, and innovation.

The deputy governor added that the county government is committed to aligning its urban development strategy with global best practices, noting that partnerships with experienced technology firms will be central to the successful implementation of the initiative.

With the planned upgrades, Kapkea said residents can expect improved efficiency in public services, smoother traffic flow, and a more business-friendly urban environment as Eldoret accelerates its journey toward becoming a smart city.
